Profile Summary 

Piya Chakraborty is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology, Shiv Nadar University, India. She is currently pursuing her doctoral research on the Indian Chinese Community. She is interested in the interrogation and unpacking of 'Indian Chineseness' through certain events, practices and memories of the community. A major chunk of her fieldwork has been completed in the 'Chinatown' areas or the Chinese neighbourhoods and localities of Kolkata, namely Tangra and Tirreti Bazar/Bentinck Street regions. Using ethnographic methods such as participant observation and interviews, she attempts to focus on food, festivals, place-making and the memory of the Sino-Indian war in the construction of Indian Chinese subjectivity.
